Baiersbronn Classic 2017 : in a bubble of time

Three years ago, we discovered the Baiersbronn Classic. A superb regularity rally hosted in the heart of the Black Forest. Packaged by the atmosphere of the event, but also by the smells and sounds of the time, we made a new time in Germany.

A trip into the past
In the world of cars of collection, we all know most of the major events around the globe. There are many and very fancy Concours d”elegance, the few living in the image of Epoqu”Car to Lyon or Retromobile in Paris, and then rallies to tourism, like the Tour Auto. On the other hand, few of us could quote the Baiersbronn Classic, that we have already followed in 2014.

For the fifth consecutive year, the tourism board of the German municipality has organized the Baiersbronn Classic, which pays homage to the race launched in 1946. To sign the end of one of the darkest periods of History, the Germany and the French government have, therefore, organized the first race after the war in the Black Forest, in the region of Baiersbronn. Thus, in 2013, to celebrate 50 years of franco-German friendship, and formalized by the treaty of the Elysée in 1963, saw the birth of the Baiersbronn Classic.

The art of living before any
After the first four editions, with some success, the race of regularity has allowed for a new time in more than a hundred glories of the past to stretch the rods, with a backdrop of the beautiful Black Forest. Thus, 132 automobiles dating from 1924 to 1975, and 45 crews on motorcycles who are given appointments in the German village, to roam on nearly 500 km of the region”s roads for three days.

If the date-stamp of the event is marked by an atmosphere of epicurean, combining the chic of automobiles and michelin starred restaurants Michelin (Baiersbronn holds the world record number of michelin-starred restaurants per capita), the participants did not hesitate to push in the last ditch their cars almost a century old, to fight against the stopwatch exclusively mechanical.

The passion of the old mechanical
For this edition, we occupied the opulent back seat of the car n°4 : an impressive Mercedes-Benz 630, 1927, carrossée by Erdmann & Rossi. A coach perfectly suited to the season and can no longer be said to immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere of the Baiersbronn Classic, between Obertal and Baiersbronn in the middle ofa forest dressed in a coat to warm hues of autumn.

Behind its impressive stature, reminiscent of a car, a dictator, the Mercedes did not hesitate to solicit all of its 160 hp, in a concert mechanical unknown up to this day , and signed by fumes to fade a green. But in Germany, the spectators are waiting for you and the host number these glories of the past from the time of a weekend to get the door open in time.

At the end of this edition, the victory belongs to the Lagonda M 35 R le Mans in 1934. It is followed by a Mercedes 230 SL 1965 and, my idol, a Fiat Otto Vu 8V Rapi Serial 1 of 1953. The Italian produced just 34 examples, also won the first place in its category.

Beautiful editions to come
More than the challenge sports of this historic rally, the participants came to look at the Baiersbronn Classic the art of living to the former, by taking advantage of a vast region and a unique opportunity to taste the dishes of the houses starred Barreis, Sackmann and Traube Tonbach.

Those enthusiasts, which address the automotive collection with a much different angle than the one we know in France, and is diametrically opposed to that of Anne Hidalgo, perpetuate the conclusion of the German newspaper Schwäbische Tagblatt, which dates back to 1946 : “never before has so much odor of gasoline and the air of the Black Forest have been mixed this way, and the silence monastic has almost never been as much bored by the noise of the engines”. It remains only to a few crews French to join the Baiersbronn Classic sign of the most beautiful ways the return of this event.
