Infiniti launches VC-T technology, the first variable compression engine in the world
The Car Guide has recently moves in Japan, in the heart of the general area of the luxury division of Nissan, Infiniti, to learn more about the long term intentions of the brand. Besides the design, the manufacturer wants to distinguish itself by its technology and is exactly in this context that it will introduce in the Auto Show in Paris in September a new VC-T engine, the first engine advantage a variable compression ratio. Several manufacturers are working on this type of technology in the passee, Infiniti will be the first to use onboard production models and more widespread.
This inline four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged Nissan designed entirely by the group is the result of over 20 years of research and development. Its advantage? Increased power and fuel economy that is estimated in the range of 20% to 30%, which puts it in direct competition with diesel engines rated efficiency energetics. It provides the performance of a coupled upper cylinder has the flexibility and the lightness of a four-cylinder.
Its operation is quite complex, but in simple terms, a lever connects a pump situated outside the engine toggles the support of the piston up and down, changing the height of the race and did well varying the compression ratio of 8: 1 (for performance) 14: 1 (for improved efficiency) as required. The engineers were able to optimize engine performance based on diet, eliminating all the disadvantages related to a lower compression ratio or higher.
The motor also comprises two injection systems, and direct intake manifold (port), once again in order to take advantage of the two systems according to the condition.
The Car Guide knows a little more
Apart from a few details advertisements officially by the manufacturer, we were able to discuss with the engineers during our visit to Japan to get some more information. First, the 2018 QX50 will be the first model to be Team this new engine will replace the 3.5-liter VQ V6.
The power figures have not yet been formalized, but there safe bet that the engine will develop more than 250 horses in our estimation. It will be paired to an automatic gearbox is continuously variable, or CVT, and may cause an integral cog system. The VC-T engine will also be at the heart of a hybrid engine, making it one of the most economical currently on the market.
A six-cylinder version could also be envisaged in the future.
We will know a little more at the next Auto Show in Paris.
