Six years after the launch of Tesla’s Model S Audi as the first manufacturer to an equal electric sedan – the powerful e-tron GT. But the car comes too late?
- Rights of use
Tesla CEO Elon Musk did for electric cars by German manufacturers usually only have a weary Smile left. While Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW have announced billion-dollar model offensive for battery vehicles. These also show the first results, especially in the SUV Segment.
Audi e-tron GT:
Monsieur 800 Volts
But ironically, the Model S sedan, and with the Musk of the myth of Tesla has founded, until today, far and wide no opponent in its Segment. More than 300,000 copies of the Model S has sold Tesla without competition.
As the first German manufacturer Audi has now GT presents cars in Los Angeles to a Battery to make this monopoly dispute – the e-tron. By 2020, the Ingolstadt-based attack with the flat of the 590-PS-Renner.
Catching up with an uncertain outcome
As promising as the study is it shows once again that German industry is in electric cars is slowly on the road, especially in the case of classic luxury sedans with E-drive. BMW wants to have 2021 its coupe-sedan i4 on the street, the Mercedes in the same year, an EQ model in the size of the E-class.
“When the new models score points with the customer, could have caught up with the German manufacturer, the residues up to about 2025”, says industry expert Stefan Bratzel of the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) in Bergisch Gladbach. He sees the race as a long race track – with an uncertain outcome.
“The German manufacturers have recognized the topic of E-mobility, too late,” says Bratzel. “Tesla is ahead of you. In order for you to have not only image points but also lost market shares.”
Low Silhouette of the car as a trademark
Audi e-tron GT for the turnaround in a key role, aims the car, but Tesla’s heart. The VW group plays in the car all the strength in development and production: With Porsche’s Taycan of the e shares-tron GT technical base, the so-called J-platform. Later the car will benefit from a modular architecture, which is used by Porsche, Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini. It fits for larger sedans, sports cars, SUVs and Crossover models.
A Model-S-imitation should the e-tron GT, but no way. For Audi design chief Marc Lichte, the low Silhouette of the car was the biggest challenge. While a developer can populate an electric SUV because of the height, easier with thick battery packs in under ground, they fought in the GT to every Millimeter.
Pretentious or eco-friendly?
The outer dimensions shows that this struggle was successful. In the length (4,94 meters) is the e-tron GT is only a little shorter than the Model S, 1.38 meters in height, but noticeably flatter. The car and the large 22-inch wheels, very sick on the Asphalt.
Strong, arrogant, and a little aggressive, the Audi looks, but that’s not the whole message wants to communicate to the manufacturer. The interior.
Where it top models smelled, Audi once, to cowhide, to sniff out the nose now, nothing more. The seat covers are made from recycling, the components of the floor mats once pushed in the sea than fish nets.
Battery filled in 20 minutes to 80 percent
Audi is eco-friendly, the ökoaffine Tesla to appeal clientele – a distraction? Just electric cars with large batteries that have a bad climate balance sheet, as long as current is still obtained in large part from coal. Especially the battery manufacture consume a lot of your energy.
In the e-tron GT a delicious a 90-kilowatt-hour battery pack. So questionable from an environmental point of view – Audi looks to be in such a large batteries, as used Tesla, apparently, the future. The car is equipped like the Porsche Taycan with an 800-Volt technology, whereby the Load is accelerating in a radical way. On a extra fast 350-kW DC charging station the battery of the e-tron GT should be filled in less than 20 minutes to 80 percent. No other manufacturer uses this high-voltage technology.
Super-charging stations as a plus point compared to Tesla
“The customer you have to offer in this class, the luxury of the short load times,” says Peter Fintl, an expert at the technology consulting firm Altran. He is sure that the System will prevail in the electric upper – class and the VW group is at least earlier than Tesla.
The projection is good, Audi, and Porsche at first – because there are only a few charging stations, which can make the 800-Volt cars. Tesla has slower, but more charging stations. The bottom line is that the Americans are better equipped, says Fintl. An industry consortium, the VW is involved, counters and builds high-performance power tank set on European motorways. Porsche also wants to place a super-charging stations at dealers.
Audi wants electric cars, again down-to-earth
Full power rather than full throttle – the principle also applies to the e-tron GT. The all-wheel drive car drives like a super sports car and roars from zero to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Due to the low center of gravity, the car will yaw probably almost to the curves. Costs he is likely to far more than 90,000 euros.
Audi is attacking Tesla with Pomp and Power, which will not please everyone. The Ingolstadt-based company want to be in electric cars in the future, but back down to earth. Next March the company will present a City-SUV. In addition, it will be 2021 Q4 e-tron.
Where, however, the A2, the icon of the economy remains, as the electric variant? Already in 2011 a study at the IAA in Frankfurt and gathering dust since then in the basement of the design center.
