Cars with alternative drive types are the big winners in the environmental ranking of the ADAC. In the current Ecotest-list of car clubs, hybrid vehicles, pure electric cars, but also natural gas-powered vehicles have received good rankings. Pure gasoline and diesel vehicles play in the front ranks of the ADAC environmental ranking.

ADAC measures in the Ecotest fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. In the past year, the auto club has tested 109 models, led to new to the rankings of the, since 2003, carried out Ecotest the ADAC. The list now includes a total of 276 models.

For the first time, vehicles were investigated, which meet from September 2019 for all cars existing, highly acclaimed, a standard of Euro 6d temp. These vehicles must meet the emission limit values not only in the laboratory but also in real operation on the road.

Cut this is always better than cars with older emission standards? “Often this is the case – but not always,” says the ADAC. Although cars emit of the new emission standard, as expected, little, poisonous gases are produced. This does not mean, however, that they are also economical. The Opel Grand country X 2.0 Diesel automatic consumes, according to ADAC, 100 km to 6.9 litres, and CO2 emissions are 217 grams per kilometre. That’s why the truck only makes it to # 59, although he excels in the pollutant rating.

The worst section 2018 of the SsangYong Rexton 2.2 Diesel 4WD automatic ex with zero points. The South Koreans had the sharp test conditions of the ADAC – CO2 emission is 300 grams per Kilometer, equivalent to fuel consumption of 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers. In addition, the vehicle has no SCR catalyst, whereby the NOx emissions are very high. Also zero points of the Kia Sorento 2.2 CRDi AWD automatic with 255 grams of CO2 per kilometre, and without an effective exhaust gas cleaning.

In the Ecotest the ADAC measures the CO2 emissions, as well as the legal limits for pollutants carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NOX), hydrocarbon (HC) on the dyno and on the street – in “practice-oriented cycles, which go far beyond the legal requirements”. The auto club also calculates emissions that arise in the fuel production.

For the manufacture of the vehicles, the energy required is not taken into account by the ADAC. Thus, electric cars cut tends to be a little better, because the battery production is energy-intensive. On the other side of the ADAC for the traction current of electric cars is a fairly high CO2 emissions of 579 grams per kilowatt-hour (German electricity mix) is estimated. The value is declining – and will decline over the life of the E-cars is expected to continue, especially as the coal’s exit is decided.

In addition, the cars will be tested with a payload of 200 kilograms. The official test cycle, the WLTP is measured only with 15 per cent of the permitted payload. In the case of the VW e-Golf, that would be just 66 pounds.
