How safe and clean transport in Germany? A study that compares the States. The back of a province that leads in Rankings regularly.
In many rankings, Bayern is far above the economic growth, for example, in the case of the crime or unemployment. However, when it comes to a sustainable transport policy, cuts off the country. Bavaria has put together the security Council, with lower Saxony the worst transport policy of all the Federal States, as the result of a study commissioned by pro-Rail Alliance, the environmental Association BUND, and the German traffic. A leader in the comparison of the Federal States of Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia.
The “länder index mobility & transport” measures in regular intervals, how well is the traffic situation in the States currently, and how the targets are ambitious, have put the local governments. Collected the data, the market research Institute Quotas. Five areas were assessed: ï
- Traffic safety
- Noise reduction
- Area consumption
- Climate protection
- Air quality.
The study is based on official statistics and information from the state governments and their transport policies. In each area 20 points are the maximum possible, i.e. a total of maximum 100 points.

What was in your state? What are the Strengths and weaknesses are? The Overview of the study’s authors have to say.
The top – ranked 1 to 4: Baden-Württemberg, Thuringia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Berlin
Baden-Württemberg is improved compared to the last assessment in the year 2016 by three places. Points gathers the country mainly due to less seriously injured in road traffic, and the goal is to reduce the number of Fatalities in 2020 by 40 percent (compared with 2010). In addition, Baden-Württemberg, according to the study, one of only four countries that want to achieve the space-saving objective of the German Federal Environmental Agency. Worse, the country performs well in terms of climate protection and air quality.
Thuringia ‘s Ranking far above, because the air quality is at its best. According to the analysis, there is the lowest concentration of fine dust, and no exceedances in nitrogen dioxide annual mean. The state has lowered as one of the few since 2009, the per capita CO2 emissions in the transport sector.
Rhineland-Palatinate is located at the economical consumption of land at the front. Only one acre is needed per day to build roads and houses. In addition, participants in traffic emit less CO2.
In Berlin , the CO2 emissions per inhabitant in the transport already at 1.6 tonnes per inhabitant is the lowest of all the provinces. In addition, the capital has set itself, according to the study authors, ambitious goals for safer transport and cleaner air. But Eight percent of all Berliners are from noise of the traffic affected, the highest in Germany.
Here the public TRANSPORT is particularly inexpensive
Upper midfield place from 5 to 8: Saxony, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and North Rhine-Westphalia
The inhabitants of Saxony are relatively rare from the Dirt and noise-affected, the country is, moreover, an “ambitious climate protection target specifically for the transport sector”. However, be violated in Saxony, a lot of people in the road and there are no specific reduction targets are set. In comparison to the last Ranking in 2016, the country was able to ascend four places.
Bremen is almost as loud as Berlin: 7.5 percent of all Bremen are noise affected, a typical Problem of the city-States. Bremen scores with a decline in CO2 emissions, compliance with the nitrogen oxide limits and the clear goal of the number of victims of road traffic accidents by 2020, to halve.
Details of the study which data were analysed?
The evaluation Figures from the Federal Statistical office, Federal Environment Agency, of the countries working group on energy and the länder initiative for a core indicators. Information from the state governments came to political objectives.
How were the data collected?
The statistical data were freely accessible. In addition, it was sent in March 2018, a questionnaire to all States, all countries with the exception of lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia have answered. For these countries, the political objectives were researched.
By whom the study?
The study has created the Institute Quotas, in the order of pro-Rail Alliance, the BUND, and the German traffic security Council. The company Quotas has created according to their own information, among other things, for the Deutsche Post and the Federal environment Agency studies.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the country with the most dangerous road. 79 Fatalities per Million inhabitants were registered, the highest value in Germany. The policy here is controlled, however, against, 2010, there were 108 Deaths. Points can the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with the lowest noise of all the provinces.
The most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the biggest losers of the evaluation, it has in comparison to 2016, three seats will be lost. The air quality is bad and the people in North Rhine-Westphalia, are plagued with noise. The black-yellow coalition has no concrete goals, as the country may be quieter. Positive NRW comes to the area of consumption. From 2010 to 2017, the traffic space per inhabitant has remained constant, and by 2020 to be consumed per day is less than five acres.
Lower midfield place from 9 to 12: Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, Hesse, and Schleswig-Holstein
Saxony-Anhalt is situated almost in every category in the middle, because the different factors cancel each other out. Thus, the fine dust concentration is low, the nitrogen oxide values are exceeded. The targets for less area consumption are far-reaching, at the same time, but concreted over much of the country and paved. The traffic is 59 deaths per Million inhabitants and 1092 serious injuries is relatively dangerous.
Brandenburg was in the last analysis sleazy child and is now after all in the midfield: The state has four seats in comparison to 2016, and made good. The rise is primarily based on improvements in air quality and climate protection. The country has but also most of the roads and rails of all: 444 square meters per inhabitant. The negative rating – due to the associated land consumption.
In Hessen , transport is as safe as anywhere else: The state has per capita the least deaths of all the provinces. In the long term, the government aims to even the “Vision Zero”, the reduction of the dead on zero. At the same time, Hesse is the country with the highest CO2 emissions in the transport – and the country in which the emissions are growing the most. Also, the air pollution is relatively high. A total of Hesse creates a space in the midfield.
High Exhaust Pollution:
In these cities, the Diesel will apply discounts
Schleswig-Holstein has rising Casualties in road traffic. The Jamaica-coalition in Kiel will not improve the “traffic safety”, but how much and by when. The North German state lands to the point of safety in the last place. Also, the previous destination for more noise protection has left the new coalition will fall. A CO2 target, there is indeed – however, emissions are currently rising instead of falling.
The final lights – place from 13 to 16: the Saarland, Hamburg, lower Saxony and Bavaria
In the Saarland , according to evaluation of relatively many residents of the traffic noise affected, and there are many Dead in the road. In the past year, there were 43 per Million inhabitants. In both areas, the CDU-SPD set by government, no concrete objectives for improvement, criticize the authors.
The Hanseatic city of Hamburg is the city-state with the worst traffic policy; Berlin and Bremen are significantly further forward. Hamburg has improved, however slightly, 2016, the city was still on the 16. Place. The study criticises, for example, that a “traffic safety program lacks ambitious targets”, and also Hamburger are particularly affected by particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and traffic noise.
VCD environmental list:
To advises these cars, the Eco-traffic club
In lower-Saxony is the land consumption is higher than in any other state: nine acres per day. Because the SPD-CDU government has abandoned also the previous space-saving target, lands of lower Saxony to the area of consumption on the last place. The country is also the only one without a climate protection target and the third has the majority of the Fatalities in road traffic.
At the back of the table is Bayern. The study criticised the relatively high number of road deaths and injuries, and the high nitrogen oxide concentration in the cities. In addition, the free state is the only country that shows no Figures for the CO2-emissions for individual modes of transport. The climate protection target is ambitious, according to the authors, little – the 2020 target values were achieved in 2007.
